To maximise the positive impact our terminals have in the communities and countries where we operate — and plan to operate — APM Terminals continuously invests in our facilities and works to develop new ones.
We are committed to doing this both in the terminals we operate independently and in terminals we operate with partners. With an eye to the future, we are Lifting Global Trade in a responsible way as we strengthen our footprint in relevant markets and expand into new ones.
Portfolio optimisation
In September 2024, APM Terminals secured an extension of our concession at the Aqaba Container Terminal (ACT) in Jordan. The concession includes commitments to invest in capacity building and training programs for Jordanian personnel in various economic sectors. As part of APM Terminals' port equipment electrification initiative, in 2024 ACT became the first terminal in Middle East to introduce electric container handling equipment.
We secured full ownership of APM Terminals Monrovia in Liberia. Through a share swap, we increased our ownership of the terminal to 100% while divesting our holdings in the terminal in Conakry, Guinea. Between 2023 and 2024, APM Terminals also invested US$15 million in terminal upgrades — dredging the Freeport of Monrovia (increasing the draft to 12.5 metres) and installing cranes — which paved the way for larger and more economical gearless vessels.
Growth & modernisation
In the US, terminal modernisation projects at Pier 400 in Los Angeles and at APM Terminals Elizabeth in New Jersey are nearing completion in early 2025. Positive results were already evident in 2024, with Increased capacity and improved efficiency. Phase 4 expansion in APM Terminals Mobile in Alabama is in full swing.
The Rijeka Gateway terminal — a state-of-the-art container terminal on Croatia's North Adriatic coast — is set to go live in 2025. As phase 1 is completed, the terminal will have an operational quay 400 meters long and 20 meters deep, an annual handling capacity of 650,000 TEU and the ability to accommodate vessels with a capacity of up to 18,000 TEU. The terminal has exclusively used renewable electricity since the beginning of construction and will continue doing so when operations commence.
In Brazil, APM Terminals completed acquisition of facilities in Suape, and we are well on our way to constructing a fully electrified terminal. Set to open in 2026, the new, state-of-the-art APM Terminals Suape is designed to ensure the highest levels of safety and efficiency.
