On track to success: a record-breaking start to 2025
The 2025 rail year has kicked off with historically high volumes at APM Terminals Gothenburg. In January, the terminal handled 22,143 containers by rail—its highest monthly volume ever. This marks a 30% increase compared to the same period last year.
"January was a record-breaking month for rail, with all-time highs in both weekly and monthly volumes. The growth is driven by continued strong development at our existing partner terminals, as well as new traffic from destinations like Malungsfors and Haparanda," says Mathias Weismann Poulsen, CCO at APM Terminals Gothenburg.
Despite challenges in Sweden’s rail infrastructure and rising track fees, rail transport remains a key solution for Swedish industry.
"Rail is both efficient and sustainable, making it an attractive transport option to the Nordic region’s largest container terminal. It’s encouraging to see demand continuing to grow," adds Mathias Weismann Poulsen.
Surging import volumes
In January 2025, rail import volumes increased by nearly 52% compared to the same month last year.
According to APM Terminals market analyst Per Wahlström, this sharp rise is primarily due to strong growth in imports across several segments, as well as companies front-loading purchases to secure deliveries in an uncertain supply chain.
"We should also remember that import volumes in 2024 were significantly lower than usual due to economic conditions," he adds.
Restored balance between imports and exports
The surge in import volumes has contributed to a unique and restored balance between imports and exports at APM Terminals Gothenburg.
“The combination of high rail capacity, balanced cargo flows, and a wide range of shipping services provides Swedish industry with a strong competitive edge. We look forward to supporting this positive trend and continuing to be Sweden’s sustainable link to the global market,” concludes Mathias Weismann Poulsen.
