APM Terminals expands operations in Kalundborg

As of August 1st, the container terminal at Ny Vesthavn in Kalundborg has expanded from 50,000 to 75,000 square metres to accommodate increased activity and growth. This expansion is part of a collaboration between Kalundborg Port and APM Terminals, reflecting a shared vision to create a competitive and ambitious port for the benefit of local businesses and customers.

"I am pleased that our valuable partnership with APM Terminals continues to grow and is now being further developed with new activities. This expansion reinforces that APM Terminals recognises the opportunities in Kalundborg, and we look forward to continuing our successful collaboration. We see even greater potential for the future,  and we have the ambition and capacity to realise them at Ny Vesthavn," says Port Director Bent Rasmussen of Kalundborg Port.

The new lease of an additional 25,000 square metres provides APM Terminals with better opportunities to meet the needs of customers in the area.

"Kalundborg holds enormous potential for us in creating an efficient and less polluting access route to and from the Danish market via Zealand. The agreement for increased capacity at the port underscores that development is moving towards growth and new opportunities for customers and the local community," says Mikael Gutman, CEO of APM Terminals Nordics.

A growing container port

In 2020, APM Terminals entered into an agreement with Kalundborg Port to establish and operate a new container terminal in Kalundborg. On March 1st the following year, APM Terminals began container operations at Kalundborg Ny Vesthavn on the newly established 50,000 square metre terminal. Since then, Kalundborg Port has constructed new buildings for customs and veterinary control, enabling the terminal to offer the full range of services typically associated with a container terminal.

The partnership has also led to the launch of the Green Zealand Gateway project, which aims to position the terminal at Kalundborg Port as a leader in the green transition. The goal is to reduce emissions through the electrification of the port's mobile cranes, and on-site vehicles have already been switched to hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO) fuels. Efforts are also underway to electrify all equipment at the terminal.
