APM Terminals Mexico Promotes Environmental Action Through Employee and Community Engagement
- Go Green Week is a global APM Terminals initiative that promotes environmental sustainability through the active participation of employees and communities.
- In Mexico, activities took place at the Progreso, Yucatán, and Lázaro Cárdenas, Michoacán terminals, benefiting local schools, authorities, and the environment.
As part of Go Green Week 2025, APM Terminals’ global initiative focused on raising environmental awareness and engaging employees and communities, over 160 team members from the Progreso and Lázaro Cárdenas terminals participated in a series of sustainability-focused activities aimed at benefiting their local surroundings. These efforts reflect APM Terminals Mexico’s ongoing commitment to sustainability, decarbonization, and strengthening relationships with neighboring communities.
Over five days, teams from both terminals visited local schools to deliver educational talks on environmental care, reaching more than 460 students and 27 teachers.
In Progreso, Yucatán, employees and their families helped improve the Vicente Guerrero Elementary School by donating 30 native trees such as X’kanlol and Balché, repainting classroom exteriors, renovating the main entrance, donating four waste separation stations, and providing eco-friendly products.
Additionally, APM Terminals Progreso joined the National Beach and Coastline Cleaning Strategy, led by Mexico’s Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT), by taking part in local beach cleanup efforts. As part of this initiative, the terminal donated equipment to help ensure these cleanups could be conducted safely and effectively.
In Lázaro Cárdenas, Michoacán, the terminal organized an "ecological barter" event, where 690 kg of electronic waste were collected and exchanged for trees to be planted. The event also featured a talk on the environmental impact of electronic waste, as well as a photo exhibition titled Wildlife Rescue, designed to raise awareness about the importance of biodiversity conservation in the region.
“Our belief at APM Terminals is that emission reduction isn’t achieved solely through technological investment—it requires instilling a culture of environmental responsibility from a young age,” said Beatriz Yera, Managing Director of APM Terminals Mexico. “The Go Green initiative demonstrates how our goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2040 extends beyond our terminals, by engaging employees, families, and communities in building a more sustainable future.”
As part of its decarbonization strategy, the Lázaro Cárdenas terminal is already operating under a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for renewable energy. The terminal is also advancing in solar panel installations and upgrading its lighting and HVAC systems.
In Progreso, a photovoltaic system was installed at the container pinning station, now fully supplying the station’s lighting and device charging needs with 100% solar power.
