Evelyn Maersk, a milestone call at APM Terminals Valencia and APM Terminals Barcelona

She is the largest vessel operating at the Spanish Gateways' facilities

Evelyn Maersk set an important milestone in the history of APM Terminals Spanish Gateways as the largest vessel to call at the terminals in Valencia and Barcelona. The successful performance of the Gemini Cooperation's MED2 service during the port calls at the Spanish terminals has been a highlight in demonstrating the quality of the service that APM Terminals provides to its customers, the result of the commitment of its team, significant investments in equipment and the collaboration of all parties involved.

The vessel is 398.9 metres long and has a capacity of 15,500 TEU. At APM Terminals Valencia, where Evelyn Maersk was also the first Maersk E-Class vessel to call, the facilities at the Muelle de Levante are undergoing major improvement projects, culminating in two large STS (Ship-to-Shore) cranes with a height under spreader of 54 metres.

The next port of call on the MED2 service was APM Terminals Barcelona, where Evelyn Maersk was also the longest ship to have called at the facilities. Her arrival coincided with the unloading of three new STS cranes (the largest and with the greatest operational capacities in the port of Barcelona), an RMG (Rail Mounted Gantry), which reinforces intermodal rail operations, and a straddle carrier included in the pilot project for the electrification of port machinery.

‘I would like to thank both the Gemini Cooperation partners and the port authorities and port communities from Valencia and Barcelona for helping to make this possible, and for ensuring that operations have run smoothly. This demonstrates our joint commitment and the value we place on both the port and the surrounding areas,’ said Julián Fernández, CEO of APM Terminals Spanish Gateways.
