The New Shipping Service Will Enhance Jordan's Position as a Regional Logistics Hub
On February 5, under the patronage of H.E. Eng. Hamza Haj Hasan, in deputy of Chief Commissioner of the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA), H.E. Eng. Nayef Al-Fayez, Aqaba Container Terminal celebrated the launch of a new global shipping service network, the Gemini Cooperation. A port of call within the Gemini network, the cooperation marks a historic step in strengthening Jordan's strategic position on the global maritime trade map.
The Gemini Cooperation between shipping giants A. P. Moller - Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd represents a quantum leap in the global maritime transport sector, providing an advanced ocean network covering seven major trade routes through 57 specialized shipping services.
Commenting on this new service, Mr. Harald Nijhof, CEO of Aqaba Container Terminal, said, “Aqaba Container Terminal is proud to be one of the ports of call in the Gemini Cooperation, marking a milestone in the terminal's development journey. This step will enhance our position as gateway to the Levant and open new horizons for Jordanian trade, contributing to our vision of establishing the container terminal as a leading regional logistics center."
The new service is built on reliability, connectivity, and sustainability, with the ambition of delivering industry-leading reliability in sailing schedules exceeding 90% once fully phased in, supported by a modern fleet of 340 vessels and a total capacity of 3.7 million TEUs. This development will enhance supply chain efficiency and reduce logistics costs for Jordanian exporters and importers.
The service is expected to contribute to:
- Enhancing the competitiveness of Jordanian products in global markets
- Improving the efficiency of import and export operations
- Attracting foreign direct investment to Jordan's logistics sector
This step comes as part of ongoing efforts to develop maritime transport infrastructure in Jordan and strengthen Aqaba Container Terminal's role as a leading gateway for trade in the region.
